I grew up eating Orange House food. I have been a regular customer since they opened, which was right after I graduated high school. They food is good and at a reasonable price. I tend to overlook the decor as I always get my food to go. Yes they tend to have high school students working there, but I got my first job at Honeybaked Hams a few stores down, so I am a little more patient than other people. I lived in La Habra, went to school there and still am loyal to this city and its stores and restaurants

Love the chicken curry. Glad it's not the sweet Japanese type (like Curry House or what you can buy in room temperature pouches at Asian grocery stores). This yellow curry is chunky with potatoes and carrots. Upgrade to brown rice and it's an even heartier dish. Establishment is hole-in-the-wall or mom-and-pop type so it feels good to patronize this local business. Prices are fair and there's plenty of variety in their menu. Also a plus is they accept debit and credit cards even tho it seems like the type of place that would accept cash only or demand minimum purchase for debit or credit card use. Much respect for that sense of customer service since the restaurant gets dinged on each debit and credit card transaction. As a sign of respect back I always try to pay cash when I have it available. Tempura items are my 2nd choice of fare. Love the variety veggies that come with it. I'm not much of a teriyaki bowl fan so up next on my wish list is one of the "don" dishes (rice bowl with seasoned meat and veggies baked with soft egg). Also interested in trying the croquette and the non-raw sushi roll selection (California, cooked shrimp, inari, and veggie). I want to try so many things but it's hard to steer away from the faves. Cashiers are always nice and extend a sincere smile. They are also patient while you make your decision on what to order or suddenly remember to customize your rice dish with brown rice instead of white rice (small charge extra). Service time is also pretty good. I've seen people call in their order and pick up for even quicker service. Dining room is modest with about 5 - 6 tables. Dressings and sauces are free for the picking at the self-serve table. They also sell several types of Pocky brand snacks and rice candy if you feel inclined for a to-go dessert or snack.

Went here last night because I needed to get something for dinner for my daughters and I was sort of limited in my options. This place needs some serious updating and CLEANING! The signage is all yellow from the years of oil build up and the plastic they cover the signs with to "protect" them isn't doing anything. Anyway I ordered a single bowl for my daughters to eat and when I placed the order I told the girl I would be splitting it and would need an extra plate. She said no problem! When my food came out I asked them for the extra plate and she showed me a stack of plastic lid covers I could use as a plate. I said that is not a plate I need a plate to which the girl who I speaking with said "the plates cost money and the owner doesn't allow is to give out extra plates"!! For real, that is a cost of doing business and pretty annoying since I asked for an extra plate when I placed my order. I should have asked for my money back and left and gone some where else at this point but stayed and made my daughter eat off a lid because they were hungry. The food was nothing special and if they are so cheap about an extra old it makes me wonder how cheap they are on their food products. The have a scale to measure out your exact portion of rice. Unbelievable!!! Never to return to this dirty hole in the wall!!

I've been coming here for years and I can't find anyplace comparable. I drive from Lake Forest for lunch here from time-to-time. There's something about the crab tempura which is awesome!

Let's face it, this is an ancient hole in the wall with terrible decor. That aside, its great value, and flavor. Teriyaki sauce is excellent.

Ahhhh good ole Orange House. One of the few Japanese operated chicken teri bowls in Orange County! The rice takes getting used to but overall it's great. The service is fast. The food is fast. The food is fresh. The sauce isn't too sweet. The value is off the wazoo. The place has limited seating but the overall decor is old school japanese noodle shop type of feel. So i was told, what would i know about 1970s Japan? Give it a shot, I'm sure you will enjoy it if this genre is your cup o tea. Don't mind the boss, he can appear douchie, but he's really cool.

Went for the first time today and loved it. Got the Chicken Curry bowl. Wish it had more spice, but that's just me. Staff is great too :-) All the pictures of the food on the wall make me want come back and try everything lol. Well played guys, well played.

Been craving a teriyaki bowl and just happened to stumble upon the Orange House. Fresh ingredients and great tasting food makes this an easy 4 star rating. Finding this place might be a little hard, but once found its a gem! The restaurant itself is small, but the food is great! I ordered the chicken teriyaki bowl with veggies. Everything was cooked perfectly and the teriyaki sauce was good! This is not your normal out of the bottle sauce, the chef is in the back cooking up batches of this stuff. On the wall the ingredients are listed and some that you wouldn't imagine are in it, like green tea! Overall I was very satisfied and would recommend it to anyone who was hungry and wanted a nice home cooked type meal.

Tried this place for the first time with my family. The food is delicious and you get a lot of it. I loved the wasabi dressing on the salad. The place itself could use some redecorating and freshening up. I took off a star for the old decor and the bad service. The cashier didn't look happy to see us. I even tried making conversation and mentioned it was our first visit. She didn't crack a smile or offer any suggestions. Combine the bad attitude and old decor and it's a sad dining experience, but the food is yummy.

This was an interesting find! The food taste better than how the place looks. It has a vintage Japanese-American feel to the shop from a few decades ago. The shop is called a "Take Out" so don't expect too much from the decor or from your dine-in experience. The food was fabulously delicious and light in a healthy refreshing way. I ordered a Sukiyaki plate and my girlfriend ordered the teriyaki chicken plate. Sukiyaki was good, but the beef was a bit overcooked to my liking. It is not the traditional Sukiyaki fare, but a more "take out" friendly version that was enough to fill my satisfaction. The teriyaki chicken was cooked nicely and their sauce was not too sweet and not too salty. It was just balanced enough to enjoy the juiciness of the chicken. There are some homemade sauces to use for your dishes. I love their thousand island sauce. And that red pepper powder brings in the heat! It is much different than other red peppers at other Japanese restaurants. I need to find out the brand and get a jar of it for myself. Overall, the food is a bit on the healthier side compare to other teriyaki places. Food appears to be fresh and cooked to order. Seems like there is one chef that does it all in the kitchen and his cooking beliefs are posted all over the wall for you to read. So the food is great (5 stars), but the restaurant is dated which makes this place appear to be a bit dirty and uncomfortable for a take out place. (-1 star).

I love, love, love Orange House. It's quick and cheap and is absolutely delicious. Just like a little taste of Japan right here in Cali, the rice and teriyaki bowls taste authentic. The little man that works there is so cute and sweet and puts all he has into keeping up his little place. It's definitely a neighborhood favorite and should be visited if you're around and unfamiliar with it!

So my hubby and I decided to give this place a whirl for lunch today. I ordered the tofu sukiyaki and hubby got the chicken cutlet bowl. Flavors were really tasty. Problem was I wanted my rice and sukiyaki separate because I really don't like super saucy things. I was charged $0.38 for it. Kinda strange to charge for that but expected since it's an Asian ran establishment. Finally, portions were really small as we both semi-satisfied.

YUMMY! This place is right next to my workout place One Body Studio. I always get a few rolls or a bowl after a great workout! They have friendly service and fair prices. Its a nice little old school place with good food.

Food was 3 stars but food for the price was 3.5 stars. I'm giving an extra 0.5 star because I saw the owner doing the hard work of grilling/cooking and the food came out very quickly for a non-fast food joint. As others have mentioned, this place is a "hole-in-the wall" place that could probably use some renovation. However, the price does reflect that and you do get a lot of food for your money. Tempura was not delicious like I had hoped. I was looking forward to a light batter, but the tempura coating was thick and on the chewy side. Their tempura sauce and teriyaki sauce do taste very yummy with the right amount of saltiness for me. The teriyaki beef did not have a ton of tendons, but had a slight barn yard taste to it ; To me, not very quality beef. The teriyaki chicken was actually very moist, delicious, and flavorful and saved Orange House from getting only 1- 2 stars. There is a sign that states Orange House only serves fresh vegetables (nothing frozen), so I did appreciate having crispy salad and juicy vegetable tempura. Word of Advice to foodies: Just have them hold their version of Italian dressing on their salad and use their Japanese vinagrette instead.

It's a nice small restaurant that's easy to miss but the food and great prices will keep you coming back for more. It has a friendly atmosphere and the other diners are regulars. There's also some interesting commentary to read on the wall from the owner himself. I can tell he really cares about this restaurant and that's the kind of place I would like to frequent more often, not to mention they have one of my favorite dishes done right, real Japanese curry!

  • Karim B.

Tried this for the first time today with a friend, and I can't believe I've missed out on this place for so long, and I live so close! Is it TOP quality teriyaki? I think many would argue that it is not, but it is probably some of the best you can get at the price range given (very good pricing!). A filling chicken or beef bowl for less than 6 bucks, and lots of other cool foods like Sukiyaki, Curry with Chicken cutlet, and Croquettes. Can't wait to go back and try everything else!

  • Ken B.

I dislike doing this because I wanted to like this place, especially after reading all the positive reviews. And I just moved to the neighborhood and was hoping to find a hidden gem. But here goes. First word: Bland! The food lacked flavor and how someone can make teriyaki sauce lack flavor is beyond me. Even the white rice with teriyaki sauce on it was bland! When the most flavorful part of the combination teriyaki plate, is the wedge of lettuce with Italian dressing on it, then it's a problem. The steak was thin and chewy, obviously over-cooked. The chicken while slightly less chewy, was also over-cooked. Now the rice, well, I love sticky rice, but what I don't like is overly mushy sticky rice. Too much water!! And yes, very bland! Finally, let me get to the Ca Rolls. Not freshly made! Pre-fabbed Ca Rolls packaged in plastic containers like you'd get at the local AM/PM Food Mart. These are obviously bought from some kind of sushi distributor! Very disappointing. Overall I'll end with three words. BLAND, BLAND, BLAND!

I was at home the other night and I contemplated what to eat for dinner. When I'm not craving anything in particular, teriyaki is one thing I can settle on. So naturally I Yelped 'teriyaki' in my city and at the top of the list was Orange House. So away I went. I stuck with the basic chicken teriyaki plate. It had a good amount of tender pieces of chicken. Good teriyaki sauce. Salad with Italian dressing (forgot to request Thousand Island) and two pieces of fried imitation crab. Nothing incredibly fancy, but the combo is tasty, quick and accomplishes its goal of providing a satisfying meal for a very reasonable price.

  • Noelle B.

Love that they have a lot of vegetarian options! Tried the tofu sukiyaki bowl - yum! Can't wait to try them all.

  • Linda R.

What a disappointment. I went here based on its yelp reviews and it was nothing special at all. Furthermore, both my beef and my husband's chicken were overcooked. I didn't find the portions to be all that generous either. The prices were okay, I guess, but I thought 85 cents for a single piece of vegetable tempura wasn't a very good deal. The tempura was also super heavy, which several people did warn about. You'll spend about 6 bucks here. For 6 bucks you could have the lunch special at any one of several Korean restaurants nearby and much more generous portion of higher quality food. Or go to Great Wall and a huge portion of tasty MBBQ. I think I've figured out the formula. If a yelper says they've been eating at a given place since they were a kid, one can assume their opinion is tinged by sentiment and adjust your decision accordingly.

Chicken quality is great! But that stops there. they should not drench the meal with teriyaki sauce. Got really salty. When i wanted a refill on a small drink, the girl at the register took my cup and refilled it then she said that its $.25. After she filled it! i only had a card so she took it. I think the charge on the card for the owner would cost more out of his pocket... i would give a 3 for the food and -5 for service

  • Jam A.

3.5 stars really....I tried the teriyaki chicken bowl and it was pretty good. The teriyaki sauce was one of the best I've had and the chicken was well-cooked. I also tried the tempura, but it was too greasy and heavy for me. The combo was around $10 (bowl + tempura) but I didn't feel I got my $ worth...maybe, I'll just get the teriyaki bowl next time for around $5. Cash only..

BOO! I can here craving some Asian and teriyaki, which i gotta say is good but not the best I've ever had, husband went in to get a menu and in the 5 mins we took to decide on the menu, they hang up their closed sign. Husband goes in and asks if we can still order and they just point at the closed sign. Terrible customer service, we were right there, and they can stay open 10 more minutes to get one more order in really! Not coming back again if they care so little for the customers.

Quintessential definition of Excellence in "Hole in the Wall" execution! Seriously, if you drove by this place, you would not stop. The decor is outdated, the shopping center is run down, and the place is easy to miss. But wait, once you taste the food, YOU WILL return! This place has the hands down best teriyaki sauce ever. It tastes like it was passed down from generations and its probably the most authentic flavor in the area. The prices qualify this place as a cheap eats venue and easily the best bang for your buck. Try this place out, you will not be sorry! Support small businesses!

  • Darren S.

Not bad. Again, if I could give a half star, I would go up to 3.5. Small, old, hole in the wall, but it was pretty good. I had the chicken teriyaki and the flavor was pretty good. I also had the 2 piece California roll that I didn't have a whole lot of hope for, but was better than I thought it would be. I had the 'cold hard rice' expectation and it was not. They do have a donburi bowl on the menu, so the next time I go [and it's a good sign that I'm going back again] I will have to try it out. Drink prices were nice too; no free refills, but for $.95 for a medium, it's a lot nicer than all you can drink for $2.50!!!

I love Orange House! I've been coming here on my own since freshman year of high school (9 years) and probably even longer since my parents used to get take-out here too. I've always loved the 70s atmosphere: wonky shaped dark wooden booths with so-ugly-orange-that-its-awesome cushions and a menu that can't have changed since they opened. It's completely casual and local- I hope it never changes. The food is classic and never disappoints. I always get the veggie tempura, gyoza, and/or sticky rice with chicken or beef teriyaki. Maybe a soda and pokey sticks! Please support this place. I don't want to ever see it close- EVER.

  • Angela D.

Went there for lunch today, and I have to say it was pretty tasty. All their food is affordable, but make sure you bring cash because they don't take debit or credit. We had the following: Beef teriyaki Mixed tempura Miso soup Gyoza California rolls Everything was very good and fresh tasting. I really enjoyed the shrimp tempura, gyozas and miso soup. Beef teriyaki was good, I will try the chicken next time. Also, people were raving about the sukiyaki and the chicken cutlet, I can't wait to go back.

come here for my quick fix of teriyaki and curry! it is super close to my house and whenever i get a craving for teriyaki or curry i come here! the plates come with a salad with italian dressing, orange wedge and two crab tempura. it taste good and fresh! nothing fancy and nothing outta this world but its good enough for me and i'm japanese ;) it is a hole in the wall place and don't expect the greatest service but i'll still continue coming here to get my fix!

Yummy chicken breast teriyaki bowls. Get the gyoza, potato croquettes, and the onion carrot tempura!!!!

I used to have a full head of hair . I used to weigh 135 lbs. I've been going to the Orange House since 1991 ; and , it's been there since before my first experience of its deliciousness ; it goes back to at least the mid-1980's . I get the very same thing every time I go : Beef Bowl with extra Teriyaki and a spank of Wasabi on the side . As I write this review of my all-time favourite Japanese 'fast food' establishment , I'm drooling just thinking about that tasty Beef Bowl ... ... and also realising that , not only is it 21:25 right now ( Friday , 21-May-2010 ) , but that Orange House is a gripping 60-65 miles from my present location *sigh* . Too bad they're not open on Sundays ; never have been , either . It's truly difficult to find GOOD Japanese food , and that's a shame . There's a billion freakin' Chinese joints around , but I don't really like Chinese food , in any real capacity ; too oily , and too much barfy sea food . No , thanks . So , yeah , 5+ star rating of Orange House . I miss your tangy , sweet Teriyaki ; your tender beef strips ; your zesty Wasabi ; and the friendly service from your excellent staff , that's been working at your place for generations ( is that oxidised-blue Volvo still kicking back in the parking lot ? ) .

Great food! I have been coming here for years. The only reason I took one star off was I cannot stand one particular cashier that always happens to be there and in a bitchy mood. She's always reading her book and when you go up to order she treats you like you interrupted her! haha

    (5)
  • Pete B.

I'm sure glad that I didn't read these reviews before trying this restaurant for the first time; I may not have gone. My tempura plate was delicious and plentiful. It just goes to show you, don't believe everything you read. Try it out and decide for yourself!

  • Paul S.

Wow.. this is place fits the description "Hole in a wall" to a T. Don't let the location and decor fool you. I guess the owner spends his profits on fresh food and better ingredients rather than renovating the place... which is fine by me. You could taste the freshness of the food here, nothing frozen. My favorite is the sukiyaki plate that comes with some crab tempura and salad. mmmm mmm.....

  • Tina C.

I'm giving this place 4 stars for the excellent service, the guy at the counter was really helpful and polite, and for the food, not the atmosphere of the place. This place is really what you call "hole in the wall." please don't let the place trick your taste buds! My friend Lauren and I was very hesitant to go, but we were hungry and couldn't find the other spot were looking for, so we decided to give it a shot. Omg, it was the best choice ever! I know chicken teriyaki is really common, but their sauce was so tasty! I loved it! Everyone on yelp was raving about the beef teriyaki so I cannot wait to try that next! I also got their tofu miso soup, being picky about my miso soups, this one was satisfying! There was a lot of big chunks of tofu and the miso paste they use tasted really flavorful and not watered down. My friend got their chicken katsu and it was delicious! Basically, it is marinated chicken katsu with a little bit of eggs around it over rice. since it's marinated, the katsu is not going to be crunchy, but it's still really good! I can't wait to try the rest of their menu, esp their crab tempura, beef teriyaki and curry! Mmmm Price is super reasonable! CASH ONLY!!!

No doubt. Best. Hands down. Get anything. You won't be disappointed. Except maybe the lack of seating area. Been coming here since high school (26+ years). Hasn't changed.

    (5)
  • Bill P.

Been going here for over 20yrs. Yes, it's good and unique (the sauce). Yes, the owner weighs all plates. The interior is actually VERY, VERY bad and not very clean. Same since it opened, ceiling tiles are actually starting to warp and are very discolored. But what can I say,I keep going back (at least once a month). My kids love the tempura too. prices have gone up recently, but still worth it. Just wish this guy would renovate the inside, seating ect <---seriously, really gross when you really look at it, as in you can use your knife and scrape scum off the chairs <---sorry this is so graphic, but it's true. The owner is their early morning till at 1am EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. He drive the grossest , oldest Volvo with dirty windows. I've done the math, this guy makes bank.

  • Lester L.

Very hold-in-the-wall restaurant. Their teriyaki sauce is very delicious, probably one of the better places. Their portions are huge! The only reason for my 3 stars is the vibe and cleanliness of the restaurant. Very outdated. Can't go wrong with their Chicken and Beef Teriyaki.

    (3)
  • Annie P.

OMG ORANGE HOUSE. I grew up in whittier and this was THE place to eat the yummiest teriyaki ever. They have great tempura and the price is right. I probly ate here once a week for like 5 years str8. If you can get past the emo high schoolers that work there....I say go!

    (5)
  • Sonic D.

This is based on what i have ate so far, they have the best curry, the chicken is so tender and curry is just right. The croquettes are delicious too. My boyfriend also likes their tempura a lot. The place is not fancy and will probably hit your spot if you are craving some quick japanese homemade food.

    (4)
  • Jim C.

I eat here regularly since it's pretty good cheap food. Interior and location is nothing to talk about - quite depressing to say the least. But the important thing here is the food - according to their claims, the restaurant only uses fresh ingredients (nothing frozen), no msg added to items, and has healthy rice-bran oil for all their cooking including frying. Food is prepared quickly and although a bit salty, tastes very good. Make sure you try the teriyaki beef - it's some of the best teriyaki I've had. Tempura and katsu-don are good, but not great. Sukiyaki was decent. Restaurants like this need all the help they can get, and this place deserves to stick around for another twenty years considering the quality of the food. Go try it out.

  • Allison H.

Orange House is AMAZING. I have been going here since high school because the teriyaki chicken is just perfect and the sauce, I don't even know how to describe how incredible it is. Jason H. recommended the potato tempura one night so on my next visit I decided to give it a try...now I go there just to get it. Other Chinese food places might do it for you but this is my spot. One night there was a closed for business sign up and I actually thought they closed, like closed forever and I started crying so hysterically that I couldn't even drive home and had to call my boyfriend to come get me. Come to find out, they were just closed for a few days because the owner had some family problems that needed tending to. Whew! I seriously don't know what I would do if this little piece of heaven no longer existed.

  • Matt M.

I was here the first day they opened and have been a loyal customer ever since. They were the first teriyaki bowl, fast food, japanese place around. They serve very fresh food and use no artificial ingredients like MSG and the likes. Woops! Actually, they notify you that their suppliers put a bit in something that I can't remember. It's a tiny take out joint with a few tables so no impressing a date here. I lOVE YOU ORANGE HOUSE!

  • Scion X.

the food is really good and the portion are just right for the money. try the crab tampira very tatsey.if your in town stop by and try it for 6 bucks i promise you won't go home hungry,by the way they now take credit and debit cards

I'm surprised that this place hasn't been reviewed yet. If you need a teriyaki fix and happen to be rolling through Whittier, this a great little spot to get it. Family owned and run, clean, quirky and inexpensive. It looks like it's been a La Habra staple for years. They're crazy about precision and weigh everything they give you - the chicken, rice, etc. Nice slices of orange are added to each order to go along with their name.

    (4)
  • Jake B.

This is a great place for lunch, but don't go here on your first date. The food is good, the food is VERY good. The Teriyaki chicken is cooked (and portioned) perfectly! It's served over white rice and great homemade sauce. The interior is old, run down, and dirty if that kind of place doesn't bother you then you're going to love it here.

    (4)
  • Paul K.

Orange House is da bomb! Their Sukiyaki Bowl is one of my most favorite foods ever. Just add some of their wasabi mayo, and BAM! You've got a dish that can appease the likes of Carl Winslow or Philip Banks! When I pass by this area, I either choose this place or Molca Salsa which is across the street. Depends on what I crave, but usually my stomach leads me to the sukiyaki. Pros: - Great food. - Great portions. - Cheap Menu. - Sukiyaki - WasabiMayo = delish Cons: - Not open on Sundays - Too addicting

  • Susan M.

Have been living in La Habra for like 10 years but this is the first time we've been here. Chicken teriyaki is really good. The krab tempura is pretty tasty. The beef sukiyaki had decent flavor but meat was tough so I'll pass on that next time. Need to come back and try the other dishes cuz the teriyaki, tempura and miso soup were delish. Basically the food is like your Japanese mom would make. Can't believe the value you get here.

  • Kristin F.

okay. so i would go here all the time in high school, since it was tasty and like, a 5 min drive. and that was excellent. and i was always like, yeah, okay, they've got decent teriyaki bowls - the sauce is pretty good (i prefer sweeter, thicker sauces in general, so this came pretty close to my ideal sauce). however, despite this my longtime love affair with orange house, it wasn't until the summer after my 2nd year of college that i discovered this place has BOMB curry and katsudon!!! which then forever endowed this place as my number one place in la habra. they use golden curry, so it makes sense that it's delicious (it's really, really hard to fuck up golden curry brand. i mean, i've done it, but it really took effort). and their katsudon is everything it should be - super fried, saucy, onions, eggs, and overall you become slightly worried about your sodium/cholesterol. YUM. love this place. plus, their inari ain't bad. okay, and as someone who works/spends 80% of my life in little tokyo (downtown LA), i will say - this place is legiiiiit. its hole in the wall, homey feel reminds me of my fav place in jtown... but even cheaper. i talk a lot of shit on la habra, but this place is totally a hidden gem of la habra/orange county

I too am surprised that this place has been overlooked. Growing up in La Habra I can remember coming here since forever! Now that I have moved away this is one place I love to come to when visiting the family. The owners are so nice and everything at this place is great!

The absolute best teriyaki there is to find. I've traveled near and far for something great and yet I still keep coming back. I grew up on this, occasionally asking grandma to not make dinner so as to get this instead. Grandma, I love your cooking, it's just I love Orange House too!

yeah, i grew up in la habra, too. this place will always be one of my most favorite teriyaki spots, ever!

Super cute and quaint place. Sweet and friendly cashier girl and adorable cooks whom I assume are the owners. The place has a certain charm that needs no decorating or updating. Walls have posts of little facts about the foods they serve. Affordable and food is good!

I've been coming here for for over 20 years and have never been disappointed. The staff is always really cool, and the food is awesome. It's reasonably priced with good sized portions. When in doubt, go for the chicken cutlet.

I have ordered+enjoyed the curry, sukiyaki, and teriyaki. The meals are also very affordable.

I've been coming here since high school and let's just say that's 20+ years. Yes, this place is run down, and it needs some updating. It has not changed one bit since they first day I was introduced to the place. A few people have written some ugly reviews about this place and I noticed they are passerby's who obviously don't know anything about good food and hole in the wall places. The food is magnificent, I love their bowls, their shrimp crab tempura and everything else. I take my kids now every time we visit my parents. Try it out and know that a hole in the wall means it's been there for ages and all for a good reason. The food is awesome and the people love it.

A huge fanatic of their beef teriyaki plate, but their teriyaki chicken is amazing too! I've been coming here for +8 years, and havent got sick of their food one bit. The food has soul. The water you can self serve literally brings life. If you're big on tasting water, I'm sure you'll be able to appreciate it. I believe the water is filtered by the owner's unique filtration system.. you can read about it somewhere on the wall of the restaurant if it's still posted up there. So far, all of my friends who were introduced to Love the place! Try it! And get the plate instead of the bowl :) Five stars!

I've had this place booked marked for a very long time. Since I never carry cash, I never went. But his time I planned ahead, I stopped by my banks ATM and got $20 out. Drove over after a long day at work and after not eating lunch! So here I am prepared with my $20 bill ready to order. Lol then I noticed the VISA/Mastercard sticker by the register.. haha! I looked at their vegetarian options, I wanted something with tofu and ordered the Tofu Sukiyaki and a 4 piece California Roll, for my daughter shrimp and crab tempura. The girl at the cash register was nice and friendly. I've never had sukiyaki and really I wasn't impressed with the dish here. The description says it's tofu cooked with a variety of vegetables. But really it was rice with mostly egg, some tofu and just scallions and onions. The dish also had a small amount of ramen noodles which were good. Tofu sukiyaki bowl was $6.15, I think a little overpriced for what it is. As for the California Roll, it tasted like the prepackaged stuff you would get at a supermarket. Probably because its not made to order. The Roll here is actually made with nori wrapped on the outside, inside there's avocado and a crab stick. As for the tempura: 1 shrimp piece and 2 imitation crab sticks, this was good, the batter was crunchy and not oily at all. I would like to go back and give this place another chance. I would like to try the tofu curry and perhaps their vegetable bowl Hope these are better than the items I had above.

Craving a bowl or plate such as chicken, beef, curry, teriyaki, tofu, sukiyaki, vegie, etc. this is the Best place around. It has stood the test of time and been here almost forever!

Lots of love to Orange House for its longevity and consistency. They've been in the same location for over 25 years I think. Their food tastes as great as the first time I ate there in high school. Yes, the place is dated and we would all like for the interior to be refreshed. But, that's the way the cookie crumbles as Ms. Olivares would always say. The owners have succeeded all these years. I don't mind at all that the decor is still the same. Just turn a blind eye and just eat their delicious food. I'm really happy that credit cards are now accepted too. Oh, and their wasabi salad dressing is so good! I choose it over their thousand island each time I go there. It's a creamy dressing with a hint of wasabi, not over powering at all. For those of you that work close by, I'm so jealous. It would be my go to for lunch everyday. Orange House, may your success go on forever and hope that you never go out of business! With that being said, I will have a Big Combo please.

Five stars cause it's the best. I get the chicken and beef teriyaki, and vegetable tempura. Soo soo good. And the sauces are homemade which I love. This is my favorite place

It's funny, people keep saying they have been going here since they were in high school, I used to WORK here in high school (early 90's). It has been and remains to be the best teriyaki I have ever had. I remember taking leftovers home after the closing shift. Best 2 month job I ever had. Seriously, the place may look run down, but I have never gotten sick or had a bad meal here. Awesome place.

Orange House has excellent Teriyaki bowls! Super cheap, great quality of food, the meat is excellent, and why I no longer goto Flame Broiler! Of course you'll have to look past the dated interior, but if you're looking for good food and great service, this place is it!

Urg, how can I explain this without being rude. There is a number of things wrong here with the place. One Taste, Quality, and service. I ordered the teriyaki combo plate with vegi's, which has beef and chicken and bonus orange and tempura(the joke). The beef and sauce was I guess the best part. Beef tasted pretty well, kinda quality, kinda not. Sauce, not too sweet or over powering, but I am not a teriyaki sauce fan, by any stretch of the imagination. now for everything else weak. Chicken tasted cheap and crappy, the cabbage was nasty soft, it doesn't seem fresh at all. Vegi's soft and crummy. Salad part was decent nothing special, however I tried some green colored sauce that looked like some Japanese restaurants, and it was crap. Now on to the service, I had my ordered taken by some tired young lady, that didn't seem like she wanted to be there, only positive thing I hear was I can put in a penny if you don't have one, which would be cool if I needed it. I find it hard to come back here, even though I can walk here from my house. Don't come here expecting too much quality, I don't know if it was a bad day for them, but first time service is key to keeping customers like me.

Okay let me start by saying this is truly a hidden gem!! It can be easy to miss driving down Whittier Blvd., but once you know it's there, you will feel like stopping probably every time you're near (or maybe that's just me). I am fortunate that I live very close by and I eat here often! The menu is broad and authentic. If you are looking for fast, delicious Japanese food made from scratch then this is your place. If you are looking for a place to take your date on Friday night, this might not be your place (the atmosphere is very laid back and it's small inside). I recommend the "Big Combo" which has a little of everything for around 12 bucks. It comes with 2 pieces of California rolls, a large portion of their house chicken teriyaki (or beef), steamed white rice, a little green salad with Italian dressing, and the BEST tempura pieces! They don't skimp on the tempura - and it is to die for. Pretty much everything here is delicious!! You must try the homemade teriyaki sauce (and ask for extra on the side). On the walls of the restaurant, there are many pieces of useful literature to read while you wait. The owner has obviously put a lot of time and effort into explaining his methods of cooking, even down to the water he uses to cook the rice in, and I sense a lot of gratitude from him to his customers. If you read the stuff on the wall, you'll know what I'm talking about. The girls who work the register are always very friendly and sweet. Make sure to try their clean, fresh water at the front (filtered via reverse osmosis). You can buy a big cup for a quarter. It's seriously the coldest, cleanest, best tasting water I've ever had (if that makes any sense?)!! They also recently started accepting credit cards. If you love Japanese food, you will not be disappointed.

The food is good but the place has some quirks. The owner who counts every grain of rice per order has never smiled in 30 years. Might be due to his focus on making sure you don't go over the rice grain limit. For years the young employees looked like runaways or cult members who looked and acted like they were brainwashed. They have recently hired some normal young people so its a little better. The combo is good and the wasabi salad dressing is great. The interior is a crack up. Check out the decor if you want some design ideas

The tempuras are extremely greasy. I picked up a piece and had to use 3 napkins to clean my fingers! In addtion, they use styrofoam for freshly fried food and the temperature of the fried food actually melted the containers. I threw away half of the food because the melted styrofoams are toxic and can cause cancer! This is the first time and the last time I order food here. Oh, and the teriyaki beef I ordered was very dry!

So happy they accept ATM. Love the wasabi dressing. If you come here you must order the carrot and onion tempura.

We've been eating here since 1983 when we moved to Whittier. Okay, the tables, chairs and booths are the same since then, minus a star for that. The owner/cook has always, and I mean always, does the cooking!. He works hard and serves his food with passion and loyalty to his customers. I love the curry bowl, spicy, hot with carrots, potatoes and chicken. The teriyaki chicken bowl and the tempura plate is fantastic. Do yourself right and try this eatery, You will not be disappointed!

If you live in La Habra and you have never been here before you are a hermit!! This is by far one of the best restaurants in this city. The food is amazing and the owners are very friendly, but there signature sauce is what makes this place so great!! I recommend the beef plate, it is delicious. The prices are also not bad at all.

Been coming here for years. Tastes exactly the same every time I eat here. The owner has been working there for years and knows exactly what he is doing. Chicken and beef and very lean and cooked perfectly. Rice is cooked perfectly and not too sticky. Gyoza are really good with the little sauce provided. They now have specials where you can mix and match you main dish with a side dish such as gyoza or the pork dumplings and a drink which is perfect +-$8. Everything is fresh and love this little hole in the wall place.

Love this place! The chicken, beef, and tempura plates are delicious! Love the service. It's nice going to a place where the service is quick. Especially when you're on your lunch break! The teriyaki sauce is not to sweet. It's made perfect. Also the tempura is light and crunchy! Try it out! I'm sure you'll enjoy it!!!!

Orange House is freakin' rad. So, my friend and I made it a tradition to come here every thursday at either 2 or 3pm depending on our schedules. their freakin' chicken bowl teriyaki is amazing. seriously. my mouth is watering and my stomach is growling just typing this, but unfortunately, it's 2am and I'm a few hundred miles away on vacation, and am unable to satisfy my Orange House craving! Prices here are phenomenal. buying the bowl and a drink comes to a little over 6 bucks. 6 bucks to fill me up nicely!? Not bad, Orange House... Not bad at all. After I finish eating, I usually grab some Pocky, one strawberry, one chocolate and take em to go. thursdays are usually my gaming day, so, I eat them while I enjoy some retro gaming (seriously, do people still play xbox 360? I haven't touched a console past 3rd gen in months). anyway, back to Chrono Trigger. (bleh. emulating retro games is suffering. such is life on vacation away from my collection)

Local legend. Reminds me of the 80's even with the cash only register. Even with the totally awkward teens behind the place who could only be hired by a guy who can't speak English .. LOL (JUST recently changed, they now take credit card).

I'm a bit prejudiced as I used to work there over ten years ago, but I still say this is the best cheap Japanese food available in at least a 10 mile radius. Try the chicken teriyaki first, it is the signature dish. For reference, the owner and cook is really Japanese and was actually a cook in Japan rather than anything else!

I love Orange House... and actually I have for over 25 years. It's always fresh, always hot and the people there are always SUPER friendly. Most of the time I have the Chicken Teriaki Bowl but over the years I've tried quite of few of their items. Their vegetable tempura is really good especially the shredded onion "cluster", amazing. No matter what you get, you've got to try the teriaki sauce on something... ANYTHING! It's 5 star delicious. Sure the "decor" is old and worn, but it's very clean... you can't always have perfection. I agree with Michael M, Arthur F and Jason H this place some great Japanese food hands down! Through the years the owner has helped in the kitchen and the other help has always been friendly and helpful (and these days that's pretty rare especially for a take out place). Prices are reasonable and the serving size is pretty large, definitely you get your money's worth and then some. They only take cash or checks so make sure you have it (or you can go to Sunny's liquor store to use the ATM and buy Lotto... that's what I do when I forget my cash) Try it, I've never been disappointed nor has anyone else that I've known. It's a little hole in the wall.... but they say good things come in small packages, Orange House proves it. I LOVE YOU ORANGE HOUSE!!! Thank you for being in my life for so many years. You rock!

  • Welcome to the I.

We were starving after a gruesome workout at 24hr and decided to check out this old school local spot yelpers recommended. Cash only come prepared.. We ordered the big special combo beef. Tempura is thick battered not to our liking but depends on your preference really. Teriyaki beef was fine as well as the California rolls.. Wasabi dressing slightly better than the thousand island so we went with that. Wow talk about keeping this place "authentic" it's either that or the owner's never heard of remodeling.

A hole in the wall that serves the most delicious beef and chicken teriyaki! My husband and I were one of the patrons of this local business and he had brought me here 2 years ago. This place is small so I suggest for large parties to take your order to go. We always come here for the succulent beef and chicken teriyaki combo. The price of the teriyaki combo is affordable in ratio to it's generous portions. I also love their shrimp and vegetable tempura. This place is old. I noticed Japanese owned fast food or restaurant usually looks old, like this place and Higo Sushi. ( yelp.com/biz/higo-sushi-… ). It's a hole in the wall, authentic maybe but definitely serves delicious stuff. It's worth trying. Its says "Orange House Take Out" so they don't have restroom inside. Anyhow, great service by the nice, polite and young staff. You must try their teriyaki people! Cash only.

Don't be fooled, this place isn't getting 5 stars for mind-blowing food, but because of 22 years of great food and service. Since I was a child, we have always eaten here for good Japanese food reminiscent of what my family makes at home but is too lazy to cook. Great tempura, delicious sukiyaki, perfect gyoza.... :) There's a reason this place has been open for so long and has such a great following. Don't let your pretentious, condescending pseudo-food critic judgemental self pass on this authentic Japanese gem in white bread Whittier.
